Shandong Hwapeng Precision Machinery Co., Ltd. facilitates localization of graphite electrodes production technology in Korea

On December 12, 2024, Korea medias reported that POSCO FutureM declared on Dec. 12th that manufacturing technology of electrodes is localized, electrodes are materials for steel smelting, there was no local manufacturing technology of electrodes in Korea before, Korea had to import more than 30000 tons of electrodes from China, Japan and India every year. The success of manufacturing of 300mm UHP electrodes is expected to make contributions to the competitiveness of steel industry of Korea.

In 2020, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of Korea promoted the national project of “technical development of artificial graphite electrodes with diameter of 300mm or above” in carbon infrastructure project, POSCO FutureM was selected to lead this project, Research Institute of Industrial Science & Technology (RIST) was responsible for development of products and technology and organization of the manufacturing equipment, POSCO MC Materials, POSTECH Accelerator Research Institute and Kumoh Institute of Technology were responsible to improve raw material performance, optimize manufacturing process and develop prototype, and it took 4 years and 9 month to succeed in research and development and to realize localization of the manufacturing technology.

On December 12, 2024, RIST sent the letter of congratulation to Shandong Hwapeng Precision Machinery Co., Ltd., it’s said in the letter that “The graphite electrode coming out of your extrusion press was put into a ladle furnace operation and we had a successful result. Hwapeng is part of this. Your equipment did a remarkable job. We sincerely thank all Hwapeng friends for the cooperation and support all these years.”
